SNS Project Update

Supply Network Projects

1. Update on collaboration project The SMEcoll project is due to complete in October this year. Funded by Leonardo da Vinci, this project has developed a series of tools to facilitate collaboration between companies both locally and internationally. Pat O’Meara pat@rtrelec.com; (RTR Electronics) participated in the project and set up a collaborative process with his partners in China. At the moment, the tools are free to use for all members of SNS. Please contact Willie Cahill williammcahill@eircom.net; for further information. A short flyer is available by request from admin@snshannon.com

2. Announcement of the FutureSME project FutureSME is a new EU project which is starting in the early Autumn. This is a major project, with six Irish partners, including SNS and 20 partners from other countries. It will develop a business model for SMEs for the next 10 to 15 years. As part of this, it will develop a series of tools to improve strategic planning, productivity, innovation and overall enterprise profitability. As more than 50% of the partners are from industry, the tools developed will be realistic and applicable to small companies. Please contact Denis Kearney. roscam@iol.ie; for further information. A short flyer is available by request from admin@snshannon.com

3. Information regarding ECO-Innovation and Eurostars EU programmes a. ECO – Innovation is designed to overcome barriers to market penetration and turn these products or processes into Europe’s future eco-innovation successes. Proposals in the areas of materials recycling, sustainable buildings, food & drink industrial processes, green buildings, energy conservation and others are encourages. Financial support of up to 60% of total cost is available. Applications from SMEs are particularly encouraged. The next cut-off date for proposals for ECO-Innovation is 11th September 2008. b. Eurostars This research programme is specifically targeted towards SMEs with a research capability. It makes funds available for international collaborative research projects in any area of technology aimed at the development of a new product, process or service. The main partner must be an SME which dedicates at least 10% of its turnover on R&D or has 10% of its full-time staff working in research. Eurostars differs from other EU programmes in that the primary research is carried out by the SME partners with support from other entities. The next cut-off date for proposals for EUROSTARS is 21st November 2008. Please contact Denis Kearney roscam@iol.ie; or Sean Ryan sean.ryan@mulberryproject.ie for further information

SMEcoll
SNS ProjectsSMEcoll SMEcoll For Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs), the establishment of business relationships and collaborations is becoming increasingly important in the face of market globalisation. Multinational companies are investing in strategic procurement programs with a view to drastically reducing their supply bases and focusing on increased spending with a smaller number of strategic partners. Individual firms cannot be good at everything. They must specialise and learn to combine their capabilities with those of other firms and organisations. These collaborations consist of identifying possible partners (e.g. clients or suppliers), providing them with appropriate information, setting up a common environment for communication and finally starting commercial operations. Until the early 90's, the limited resources that SMEs could allocate for such purposes significantly undermined the efficiency of the collaboration. However, recent advances in technology, including the rapid increase of the use of the Internet, suggest that efficient and cost-effective collaboration between SMEs is possible. The SMEcoll project, which is led by Supply Network Shannon and involves 10 partners across 5 countries, addresses the management and control issues with relation to collaboration both at a local and an international level. The project has developed processes to enable companies to • assess whether partnering with other companies can help to achieve its business goals and • facilitate the collaboration process with a workflow-driven process manager and a range of other collaboration tools. These tools are available free to members of SNS until the end of 2008. Contact Denis Kearney for further information on this project (086 8225991). www.smecollaborate.com
